UEFA has announced two major rule changes that will come into effect from the start of the 2026/27 club competitions, introducing a revised yellow-card suspension system and a running match clock across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the European governing body has informed all member associations and participating clubs that players will now receive a one-match suspension only after accumulating four yellow cards during the league phase, instead of the previous threshold of three.

Under the revised disciplinary regulations, further suspensions will still apply after additional yellow-card accumulations, including at five and seven bookings.

The change is designed to reduce the number of players missing key matches through minor disciplinary offences while maintaining sanctions for persistent infringements.

UEFA has also scrapped its long-standing practice of freezing stadium scoreboards and television match clocks at 45 and 90 minutes.

From the 2026/27 season, clocks will continue to run throughout added time, displaying the actual elapsed time until the referee blows for half-time or full-time. For example, a match in stoppage time could show 93:14 instead of remaining fixed at 90:00.

The governing body believes the change will provide greater transparency for supporters, broadcasters and analysts, although referees will continue to have sole authority over the amount of added time played.

The new regulations will take effect immediately, beginning with the Champions League play-off ties scheduled for 19 and 20 August, which will determine the final eight clubs to qualify for the competition’s 36-team league phase.

While UEFA has not publicly explained the rationale behind the running clock, reports suggest the move aligns with evolving broadcast standards and recent innovations in world football.

The changes have generated mixed reactions, with some managers welcoming the relaxation of the yellow-card suspension rule, while others believe the visible running clock during stoppage time could increase pressure on players in crucial moments.
