President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded Nigeria’s senior national football team, Super Eagles, for reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire after beating Angola 1-0 in their quarterfinal match on Friday.
President Tinubu, currently on a private visit to France, spoke to the team via zoom on Saturday morning.
In a video call coordinated by the minister of sports development, Senator John Owan Enoh, President Tinubu dressed in the Super Eagles home jersey, showered encomium on the players for their performance so far and urged them to go a step further by reaching the final and clinch the cup for fourth time.
“It is a great honour to see you up to this stage of the competition.
“To all of you, our children and the entire country watching you, we are very proud of how far you have gone and inspired that you are able to go further. We have solid confidence in you and believe you can do it. What you have demonstrated in the last match was a great team spirit,” President Tinubu said.
LEADERSHIP reports that a first-half goal by Striker Ademola Lookman earned Nigeria a narrow victory over a spirited Angola to advance to the semifinal for the 16th time, equalling Egypt’s record for most appearances.
