Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna Central Senatorial District, including the seven local government chairpersons in the zone, have endorsed former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 Senate election.
The endorsement was announced at a high-level meeting of party leaders and stakeholders in Kaduna, where the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sadiq Mamman Lagos, said the decision reflected the collective position of the party’s leadership in the zone.
“We are here not to do anything but to endorse a candidate for the election coming up in January 2027. These are major stakeholders, elected local government chairpersons, party executives and key figures. I did not make this decision; it is by endorsement of stakeholders in the central zone.”
“Lagos, however, clarified that the move does not foreclose the party’s internal democratic process, stressing that primaries would still be held.
“We never said there would not be primary elections in Kaduna Central, but the party and major stakeholders have endorsed someone based on credibility and political popularity,” he stated.
According to him, Sani was considered the most viable candidate capable of securing the APAPC’s victory in the senatorial contest.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, urged party faithful to close ranks and support the endorsement, noting that alignment between Sani and Governor Uba Sani would fast-track development across the State.
“With Uba Sani as governor, and if Shehu Sani is elected senator for Kaduna Central, there would be faster development across the entire state,” Aiyaki said.
Chairpersons of the seven local governments, Chikun, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Igabi, Birnin Gwari, Ikara and Kajuru, also backed the former senator, citing his longstanding role in pro democracy struggles.
Responding, Sani expressed appreciation for the endorsement, describing it as both an honour and a call to greater responsibility.
“I thank all the stakeholders, party executives and those holding positions of power in Kaduna State for this endorsement”.
He, however, maintained that the endorsement does not shut the door against other aspirants.
The endorsement does not preclude or exclude anyone from contesting this election. Any party member who disagrees should come and contest the primaries with me. I am open to that,” he said.
Sani also pledged improved performance if re-elected, pointing to projects executed during his previous tenure, including interventions in healthcare, education and social welfare.
