The Managing Director of NG Clearing Limited, Farooq Oreagba, has stated that wearing tattoos and earrings cost him several high-level career opportunities in Nigeria’s corporate world.

Oreagba became popular on social media in June 2024 after photos of him riding a horse at the annual Ojude Oba festival went viral. His unique appearance, which included visible tattoos, made him a well-known figure and led to appearances in the fashion and entertainment industries.

Speaking on the latest episode of the MENtality podcast, the 60-year-old executive explained that his non-traditional look has attracted heavy scrutiny and judgment within the banking industry.

“I’m a banker, I’ve been a banker all my life… I’m the CEO of a financial institution. I would say I’m probably the only CEO in corporate Nigeria who wears earrings and has tattoos. That has been a problem from day dot. They judge me terribly.”

He noted that his personal style has stopped him from getting certain top positions. He also mentioned that some board members have complained about his public image, arguing that a financial firm’s chief executive should not be seen showing tattoos.

Oreagba questioned the criticism, stating that his employers were already aware of his appearance and personal habits before hiring him. He added that surviving a bone cancer diagnosis, which he was told about over a decade ago, completely changed his priorities and gave him a new outlook on personal freedom.

The Ojude Oba festival, where Oreagba regularly participates, is a major cultural event held annually in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
