Ireland Tightens Rules For Long-Term Student Visa Applications

International students planning to study in Ireland for more than three months must now obtain a long-term study visa before travelling, the country’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has announced.

According to updated guidance cited by the Economic Times on Tuesday, non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals enrolling in academic programmes lasting longer than 90 days are required to apply for the visa from their home country or from a country where they are legally resident.

The ISD said applications can be submitted up to three months before the intended date of travel, with applicants required to complete the process through Ireland’s Automated Visa Application and Tracking System (AVATS).

After filling out the online form, applicants must print, sign and date the application summary, pay the required visa fee, and submit supporting documents as part of the process.

The required documents include a valid passport, recent passport photographs, proof of private medical insurance, a letter explaining the purpose of study, and an official acceptance letter from an Irish educational institution.

Applicants are also expected to provide evidence of tuition fee payment, academic qualifications, proof of language proficiency where applicable, and documentation showing sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay in Ireland.

The immigration authority further stressed that applicants must declare any previous visa refusals. It added that students under 18 years may be required to submit additional documents, including parental consent forms and verified accommodation arrangements.

The ISD warned that incomplete applications could result in refusal, while the submission of false or misleading information may lead to visa denial and a potential five-year ban from applying for an Irish visa.

It noted that applications are processed in the order they are received, adding that immigration officials may request additional information before making a final decision.

Prospective students were also advised not to make travel bookings until their visas have been approved, in order to avoid financial losses.

The agency clarified that holding a valid visa does not guarantee entry into Ireland, as immigration officers at the point of entry may still assess whether applicants meet all entry requirements.

It added that extensions of permission to remain in Ireland are only granted in rare and exceptional circumstances and must be requested before the expiration of an existing permission.

The ISD urged applicants to ensure that all submissions are complete and accurate in order to avoid delays, refusals or other complications in the visa process.
