York University Students Raise Concerns Over Lord’s Chosen Recruitment Activities On Campus

Some students at York University have raised concerns online about the presence and activities of the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries on campus, with some describing the church as a “cult.”

The concerns emerged after students alleged that members of the church had increased their activities around the university, approaching students and inviting them to participate in the church.

One student claimed that members had been seen wearing matching outfits and using microphones and speakers while preaching both inside and outside the Student Centre.

While acknowledging that religious organisations and faith-based groups have a place within university communities, the student said the manner in which the group was allegedly approaching students had made some people uncomfortable.

The student questioned whether the level of recruitment and public preaching taking place around the campus was consistent with the university’s rules governing religious activities and student engagement.

The concerns have since generated discussion online, particularly around the balance between freedom of religion and expression and students’ right to feel comfortable within shared university spaces.

However, the allegations made by students online do not by themselves establish that the church has violated any university policy, and the characterisation of the organisation as a “cult” remains an allegation rather than a fact.

The development also highlights the challenges universities can face in managing religious activities on diverse campuses, where students and religious organisations may have different expectations about appropriate forms of outreach and proselytising.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from York University or the Lord’s Chosen church addressing the students’ concerns.
