NBBF Election: 4 Candidates Battle To Succeed Kida Amid Controversy

Delegates have converged on Abuja to elect a new president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), bringing to an end the eight-year tenure of Musa Ahmadu Kida, who is not seeking a third term.

The election comes at a critical juncture for Nigerian basketball, a sport blessed with immense talent but hampered by years of factional disputes, administrative challenges and an underdeveloped domestic league.

Four candidates have been cleared to contest the presidency: former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji, ex-international Ejike Ugboaja, basketball promoter Igoche Mark and Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.

While Oyedeji and Ugboaja are seeking to bring their experience as former national team players to the administration of the sport, Mark is banking on his grassroots development initiatives. Abdullahi, meanwhile, is presenting an agenda centred on institutional reforms, transparency and commercial sustainability.

However, the contest has been overshadowed by allegations of irregularities, disenfranchisement and a lack of transparency in the electoral process.

The controversy began with the extraordinary congress in Yola, which approved the electoral committee but was boycotted by several state association chairmen who claimed they had been excluded.

Allegations of inducements, disputed delegate lists and attempts to favour a particular candidate have further heightened tensions, with some aspirants questioning whether the election will be free and fair.

Four Candidates, Four Visions

Oyedeji: Prioritising Players’ Welfare

Oyedeji is presenting himself as a bridge-builder with firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing Nigerian basketball.

From grassroots basketball in Ibadan to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the former D’Tigers captain has built a career that has taken him to the highest levels of the game.

He currently serves as a vice-president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and secretary-general of the World Olympians Association.

His campaign focuses on improving players’ welfare through insurance schemes, medical support and post-career transition programmes.

Oyedeji also wants to restructure domestic competitions into commercially viable, year-round leagues capable of providing players with regular competitive opportunities.

“I am not coming to take from basketball. I am coming to build a legacy that will outlive us all,” he said.

His proposed reforms are aimed at addressing longstanding concerns over players’ welfare and creating a sustainable structure for the development of the game.

Ugboaja: Promising Structural Reforms

Ugboaja, a former D’Tigers forward who was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2006, has made structural reforms a central plank of his campaign.

He has been among the most vocal critics of the electoral process, demanding greater transparency and inclusiveness.

The former international argues that Nigerian basketball cannot produce and retain quality players if the domestic league continues to operate for only a few weeks.

He has proposed a league calendar spanning at least eight months, stronger school and university basketball programmes, and a national team selection process based on merit rather than favouritism.

“I’m coming to fix Nigerian basketball,” he declared, promising to address the factional disputes that have characterised the Kida administration.

Ugboaja believes a more organised domestic structure would improve players’ development, strengthen national teams and create opportunities for commercial investment.

Mark: Betting on Unity and Grassroots Development

Mark enters the race as a basketball promoter with considerable experience in grassroots competitions.

As the founder of the Mark D’Ball Basketball Championship, he has invested in competitions designed to give players exposure and provide opportunities for development outside the federation’s regular structures.

His campaign is built around reconciliation and the need to restore trust among stakeholders divided by years of internal disputes.

“The first thing I will do when elected as president of NBBF is to unite the house,” he said.

Mark’s agenda includes bringing rival factions together, rebuilding confidence in the federation and restoring the credibility of domestic basketball.

He believes unity is essential to implementing meaningful reforms and creating an environment in which players, coaches, officials and administrators can work towards common goals.

Abdullahi: Promising Institutional Reforms

Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, is arguably the most controversial of the four candidates.

Although less prominent in mainstream basketball circles than Oyedeji and Ugboaja, he has attracted support from sections of the grassroots basketball community.

His supporters cite the DAM Foundation Championship in Okene, Kogi State, as evidence of his commitment to grassroots development and players’ welfare.

Abdullahi has also maintained that he has been involved in basketball at various levels for decades.

His New Dawn agenda promises transparent administration, measurable performance targets, a national stakeholders’ summit and a 100-day action plan that includes a financial audit and the introduction of a unified competition calendar.

He has pledged to make women’s basketball a major component of his development strategy while pursuing commercial sustainability through sponsorship, broadcasting and engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora.

However, perceptions that he is the preferred candidate of the outgoing administration have added another layer of controversy to his campaign.

Electoral Process Under Scrutiny

Beyond the candidates’ manifestos, the credibility of the election has emerged as a major concern among stakeholders.

The NBBF electoral committee, chaired by Barrister Lanre Glover, has maintained that it will operate within its mandate and conduct a free and fair election.

Nevertheless, some of its decisions have fuelled criticism.

Former D’Tigers coach Ayo Bakare was disqualified after reportedly submitting his nomination forms 12 minutes after the deadline, while Mark’s clearance has remained conditional.

The composition of the delegate list has also been challenged, with stakeholders alleging that some state association chairmen were removed or had their voting rights transferred shortly before the election.

These disputes have raised questions about the inclusiveness of the process and whether all eligible stakeholders have been given a fair opportunity to participate.

The outgoing board’s handling of the transition has further deepened mistrust.

In a commentary published by Vanguard, veteran journalist Patrick Omorodion drew parallels between the election and Nigerian national politics, criticising what he described as the tendency of federation presidents to treat their organisations as personal estates.

The Yola congress, which approved the electoral committee, reportedly attracted 39 of the 44 delegates. However, the boycott by dissenting stakeholders highlighted the divisions within the basketball community.

The dispute has left the incoming leadership with the additional task of rebuilding confidence in the federation’s electoral and administrative processes.

Challenges Await New President

Whoever wins the election will inherit a federation facing significant challenges, both on and off the court.

Nigeria’s national teams, D’Tigers and D’Tigress, have demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level internationally, with the women’s team establishing itself as one of Africa’s leading sides.

However, the strength of the national teams has not been matched by a consistently competitive domestic basketball structure.

Short league seasons, concerns over players’ remuneration, inadequate facilities and limited commercial investment have continued to constrain the sport’s development.

The new president will therefore face pressure to establish a sustainable domestic calendar, improve players’ welfare, strengthen grassroots programmes and attract investment into the game.

The leadership transition will also require careful engagement with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the National Sports Commission and state basketball associations.

FIBA has played a significant role in the federation’s recent history, including extending the Kida-led board’s mandate until October 2026 and rejecting proposed amendments to the federation’s statutes.

The incoming administration will need to address the concerns surrounding governance while maintaining constructive relationships with the international governing body and domestic stakeholders.

Although the four candidates have outlined different approaches, their manifestos share several priorities.

Oyedeji emphasises players’ welfare and cooperation across generations; Ugboaja advocates structural reforms and longer domestic competitions; Mark places unity at the centre of his campaign, while Abdullahi promises institutional development, accountability and measurable results.

Their differences notwithstanding, all four recognise the need to improve the administration and development of Nigerian basketball.

Beyond the Ballot

Thursday’s election represents more than a contest to replace Kida. It is a test of whether Nigerian basketball can move beyond its longstanding divisions and establish a more accountable and sustainable system.

The delegates gathering in Abuja will make a decision that could shape the direction of the sport for years to come.

Players, coaches, referees, administrators and supporters will expect the winner to move quickly from campaign promises to practical reforms.

The successful candidate will need to unite competing interests, restore confidence in the federation, strengthen domestic competitions and create an environment in which players can develop and earn a sustainable living from the sport.

Most importantly, the new president must demonstrate that the federation serves the interests of Nigerian basketball rather than those of any individual or faction.

The election will determine who succeeds Kida. Whether it also marks the beginning of a new era of stability and development will depend on the decisions taken after the votes have been counted.
