A Professor of Agricultural Extension at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State, FUTO, Prof Anthony Ani yesterday emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Ebonyi South Senatorial bye election slated to hold on February 3.
Declaring the result of the primary election held at the Afikpo LG headquarters, Afikpo, the chairman of the electoral panel, Akin Akinsehinwa said Ani scored 281 out of the 285 votes cast.
Prof Ani had emerged the consensus choice of the party after a stakeholders’ meeting of Ebonyi South Senatorial zone which prompted the younger brother to the minister of Works, Chief Austin Umahi to discontinue his senatorial ambition.
The Ebonyi South Senatorial seat became vacant following the resignation of Sen David Umahi from the Senate and the declaration of fresh election by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the primary election, APC state chairman, Chief Stanley Emegha said that the election of Ani was a family matter.
“We critically analysed those who are fit and chose him based on his pedigree. The election was a family affair and a family is like an empire which you should build well to succeed.
“The APC listens to the voices of the masses and hearkens to their calls to subsequently do what they want,” he stated.
Reacting to his electoral victory, Prof Ani said his choice for the position was like a dream for him and thanked the party leadership for adopting him as the choice candidate.
