James Tolkan, the popular actor known for playing tough, intimidating characters in Hollywood hits, has passed away at 94.
The actor died on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York, according to a statement from his family.
Tolkan became famous for his role as the strict high school principal, Mr. Strickland, in the Back to the Future trilogy. Fans often remembered him for his catchphrase, where he called students “slackers.”
He also played a memorable role in the 1986 movie Top Gun, starring as the no-nonsense commanding officer who disciplined Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick.
Throughout his long career, Tolkan appeared in many other films, including Dick Tracy, Serpico, and WarGames.
Born in Michigan in 1931, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before moving to New York to study acting. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee
