Cape Verde Coach Bubista Resigns To Take Over Moroccan Club RS Berkane

Cape Verde national team coach Bubista has resigned from his post to sign a two-year deal with Moroccan top-flight side RS Berkane, the federation confirmed Tuesday.

The team from the north-east of the kingdom are not traditionally seen as one of Morocco’s big clubs but have enjoyed success in recent years.

They claimed their first domestic league title in 2024-25 and are three-time winners of the Caf Confederation Cup, Africa’s second tier continental club competition.

Berkane caused controversy in 2024 by wearing a shirt in the Confederation Cup which featured a map of Morocco including the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

The 56-year-old, who led the Blue Sharks to their first-ever World Cup appearance and a last-32 exit against Argentina, replaces Moin Chaabani at the club that finished second in Morocco’s Botola last season. Berkane, three-time CAF Confederation Cup winners, won its first domestic league title in 2024-25.

Bubista’s departure follows a wave of coaching changes among Africa’s 10 World Cup representatives, including Algeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Senegal, and Tunisia. Cape Verde’s federation thanked Bubista for his “dedication and professionalism” and wished him success.
