Two of football’s greatest ever players are closing in on a milestone no man has ever reached: 1,000 official career goals. Cristiano Ronaldo sits on 981. Lionel Messi is on 936 . Here is exactly where the race stands, and why it matters.

The State of Play

Ronaldo needs 19 goals to reach 1,000. Messi needs 64 . The gap is 45 goals, and the clock is ticking on two careers that have defined an era.

Ronaldo, at 41, remains Al Nassr’s focal point. He has scored four goals in seven matches in the Saudi Pro League this season, and last campaign he netted 30 in 37 across all competitions for the club . Al Nassr are competing in both the Saudi Pro League and the AFC Champions League Elite, giving him a steady supply of fixtures until May .

Messi, at 39, is in the form of his life. He has scored 38 goals in 41 matches for club and country in 2026, including 25 MLS goals for Inter Miami this season . Since retiring from international football in October, he is now playing exclusively for his club, with a run of MLS fixtures and potential play-off matches ahead .

Ronaldo’s Path: The Frontrunner

Ronaldo’s advantage is not just numerical. It is structural. He has played 160 more career matches than Messi—1,339 to Messi’s 1,179—and his game has always been built around scoring volume . Even as his athleticism has softened, his positioning and finishing in the box remain elite.

The complicating factor is off the pitch. Ronaldo was provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation in October after leaving the national team camp, a saga that has added noise to what should be a straightforward countdown . But domestically, he is still finding the net. A brace against Al-Diriyah took him to 981, and the AFC Champions League Elite celebrated the milestone publicly .

The question is not if Ronaldo reaches 1,000. At his current rate, it is when—likely sometime in the 2026-27 season, barring injury or suspension .

Messi’s Path: The Long Game

Messi’s route is harder, but it is not impossible. He is scoring at a faster rate than Ronaldo right now. In 2026, he has 38 goals in 41 games; Ronaldo has four in his last seven for Al Nassr . Messi also has time. His contract with Inter Miami runs until December 2028, with an option for a further two years that would take him to 43 .

The math, however, is unforgiving. To beat Ronaldo to 1,000, Messi would need to outscore him at a rate of roughly 3.3 times over the same period . That is not a realistic scenario while Ronaldo is 19 goals away and still playing.

What Messi can do is make the race interesting. If he maintains his current MLS form and Inter Miami go deep into the play-offs, he could enter 2027 within 40 goals of the mark. At that point, with Ronaldo potentially past 1,000, the story shifts from “who gets there first” to “how far can Messi push the record.”

Why 1,000 Matters

No player in the history of top-level football has scored 1,000 official goals. Pelé’s tally is contested; Josef Bican’s is often cited around 805; Romário and Gerd Müller sit in the 700s . Ronaldo and Messi have already left those numbers behind. The only question is whether the record will belong to one of them—or both.

For Ronaldo, the milestone is personal. He has said reaching 1,000 would be “remarkable” but insists he is focused on the present . His former manager Roberto Martínez has suggested Ronaldo is not obsessed with the number: “What difference does it make to me whether I score 1,050 or 950? I remain the same player” . Whether that is genuine indifference or public deflection, the football world is watching every goal.

For Messi, the milestone is a late-career bonus. He has already won the World Cup, eight Ballon d’Ors, and every major club honour. Reaching 1,000 would be the final statistical exclamation mark on a career that has never needed one.

The Verdict

Ronaldo will almost certainly reach 1,000 first. He is 19 goals away, playing regularly for a club that creates chances for him, and he has no international football to distract him—only a domestic suspension to navigate. Messi is scoring at a higher rate, but he is 45 goals behind. The gap is too wide, and the runway too short.

The real race is not to 1,000. It is to see how far each man can push the number before the curtain falls. Ronaldo will likely set the first mark. Messi, if he plays into his forties as his contract allows, may yet make the final total a moving target.

For now, the count is 981 to 936. And for the first time in a rivalry defined by closeness, the finish line is in sight—for one of them.
