Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho of Kogi East has expressed his condolences to the Kogi State government and families impacted by the tragic boat capsizing that occurred on the River Niger.
The incident, which involved approximately 200 market women, occurred as they were travelling from Kogi State to Niger State.
In a statement issued and personally signed by the senator, Echocho conveyed his deepest sympathies to the victims‘ families, urging them to find strength in the face of such an overwhelming tragedy.
He also offered prayers for the souls of the departed, seeking eternal rest for those who lost their lives in the accident.
The National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed the capsizing occurred along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger, a route frequently used for commercial transportation between Kogi and Niger states.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident, but concerns have already been raised about the safety of waterway transportation in the region.
Senator Echocho also highlighted the waterway‘s growing dangers, noting that accidents on the route have become increasingly frequent.
“The waterway connecting Kogi and Niger states has become increasingly perilous, and relevant authorities must take immediate action to implement stronger safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future,” he said in his statement.
Echocho called on the government to prioritise the safety of people who rely on water transport as a primary mode of travel. He emphasised the need for better regulation, improved infrastructure, and the enforcement of safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
The senator commiserated with the victims‘ families, expressed solidarity, and assured that the state government would support the injured and those affected by the disaster.
Echocho’s statement emphasised the importance of community and government efforts to aid in the healing process for those impacted by the loss.
The incident sparked widespread grief across Kogi State, with many local leaders and citizens coming together to support the affected families. The boat capsizing has again brought attention to the urgent need to improve the country‘s water transport safety measures.
Meanwhile, the State government pledged to assist the victims‘ families and work with federal agencies to provide the necessary support for the injured.
