In a statement by NGE president, Mustapha Isah and general secretary, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren, yesterday, in Abuja, the guild described Dokpesi as an innovator in the broadcast industry and a staunch supporter of independent press, press freedom, and access to information.

The NGE acknowledged High Chief Dokpesi’s instrumental role in the liberalisation of the Nigerian broadcast industry through his establishment of Raypower 100.5FM, the first private radio station in the country. It said as an employer of numerous editors and hundreds of journalists, Dokpesi utilised his media platforms to foster democracy and amplify the voices of the marginalised.

The late media mogul was a passionate advocate for press freedom and an independent press. The NGE emphasised their close collaboration with Dokpesi during various instances when the National Assembly attempted to pass laws that threatened the media. His resounding voice played a vital role in defending press freedom.

Describing him as a caring father, visionary leader, media mogul, and philanthropist, it said High Chief Dokpesi left an indelible mark on the media industry and created lasting memories in the hearts of millions of people across Nigeria.

The NGE stated that testimonials from Dokpesi’s employees attested to his kindness and respect towards his staff and everyone he encountered. He was known for his willingness to listen and provide valuable advice whenever needed. Many journalists’ professional journeys would be incomplete without mentioning the impact of Dokpesi in their lives.

It extended heartfelt condolences to the Dokpesi family and the entire DAAR Communications family. They also expressed their belief that if the earth that covers Dokpesi’s resting place is light, it is a testament to his embodiment of humanity and his exceptional service to others and his country.

Also, the director-general of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof Abubakar Sulaiman has described the death of Dokpesi as a great loss to Nigeria.

Sulaiman made the remarks in a condolence message he issued on the passage of the elder statesman.

“He was a prominent figure in the media industry, and his contributions have left a lasting impact. My heartfelt condolences to the Dokpesi family and the entire staff of AIT and Raypower FM.

“His departure is a significant loss for the entire media landscape. He was a pioneer and a visionary who consistently pushed the boundaries of journalism and entertainment.

“His unwavering dedication to excellence and innovation has undoubtedly shaped the media industry as we know it today,” Sulaiman said.

He prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and his loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.
