Nigerian shot put standout Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has provided N950,000 in prize money for the men’s shot put event at the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet, a move intended to back emerging athletes and raise the profile of field events.
The meet is set for November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos. The sponsorship will reward the top four finishers: N400,000 for first place, N300,000 for second, N150,000 for third and N100,000 for fourth.
Enekwechi, a two-time Olympian, African champion and African record holder, said the support comes from his affection for his country, his sport and its people. He said his position gives him an opportunity to give back and inspire young talent that has not yet had a chance, adding that he is glad to help when called upon.
The prize fund is expected to motivate competitors and draw attention to field events, which often receive less focus than track disciplines.
Athletic Heat chief executive officer Ese Oguma welcomed the contribution, saying he was delighted and surprised by the scale of the sponsorship, especially the N400,000 first prize. He said such support has not happened before in the history of Nigerian athletes and was pleased the meet could give field athletes an opportunity to earn.
Oguma also praised Enekwechi for using his achievements and influence to support the next generation, describing him as a leading figure in the men’s throws.
The initiative highlights the role established athletes can play in strengthening grassroots competitions, offering financial incentives to emerging competitors and increasing visibility for field events in Nigeria.
Enekwechi encouraged interested athletes to register through A3Tickets and wished all participants success at the meet.
