Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has elected Comrade Mohammed Shafas as the new chairman.
Shafas was elected during the 7th quadrennial delegates conference, which held amid tight security at Government Secondary School (GSS), Kuje area council of Abuja.
Declaring the result, the retuning officer in the election, Labaran Garba, said Shafas polled 243 votes to defeat three other aspirants, Ngbonzigi Dorkat and Adamu Adamu, who got 4,101 and 24 votes respectively.
Shafas, in his acceptance speech, appreciated the delegates for the confidence they have in him to elect him and other executives to pilot affairs of the union for next four years.
He assured them that union under his leadership will work closely with the stakeholders in the education sector in order to ensure teachers across the FCT feel impact of the union.
The chairman called on the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, to give more priority attention to the welfare and benefits of primary and secondary school teachers in the territory.
He said both primary and secondary schools teachers in the FCT has over the years been dedicated to their duties despite the challenges they are facing.
Shafas, however, listed some challenges facing teachers in the FCT to include, late implementation of staff promotion, inadequate payment of promotion arrears, irregular payment of annual increment and among others.
“And tackling these challenges facing our teachers would not only motivate them but will also make them to be more dedicated to their duties in their respective schools,“ he said.
Also, the FCT minister, Nyemso Wike, represented by the mandate secretary for education, congratulated the newly elected officials of FCT NUT.
He also commended members of the electoral committee for ensuring the election was held peacefully without any rancor, even as he assured that the FCT administration will continue to give attention to not only teachers welfare but improving standard of education in the FCT.
Among other officials that were declared also declared winner included, Dr Paul Akpan, deputy chairman, Abubakar Mohammed, as vice chairman I, John Josephine, vice chairman (II) Samson Haruna, vice chairman (III) Lami Tanko, vice chairman (iv) and Ameh Mahmud, as Treasurer.
Others are, Abubakar Safyani, as national representative, Ibikun Adekeye, as publicity secretary, Tanko Sarki Pada social secretary, Rukaiyat Salihu, assistant social secretary, Umar Lawal, auditor (II), Olusola Omolara, state auditor, and Daniel Innocent, who emerged unopposed as auditor (I).
