New national president of the Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT) Mrs Bosede Florence Ikhanoba, has reiterated the need for the federal Government to capture everybody in the tax net to be able to generate more revenue.
Ikhanoba stated this during her investiture ceremony as the 5th national president of the SWIT which was held in Abuja at the weekend.
“There are other areas the government should look into. For instance, those who are not presently in the Tax net, government should find a way to bring them in. I believe once everybody is in the tax net, It will help. Currently, it is civil servants that pay tax regularly because it’s deducted at the source. But there are many men and women doing great business and earning good income that are not paying tax, the government should get them to pay,” she said.
Ikhanoba said during her tenure as the SWIT president she will mobilise members to do more enlightenment and advocacy on the need for more individuals to pay their tax.
The national president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Mr Samuel Agbeluyi, who swore in the 5th president of SWIT, said tax revenue should be judiciously utilised to enable the taxpayers’ community to have confidence in the system.
He said, “Once there is confidence in the system, you will see more voluntary tax compliance and once there is voluntary tax compliance, the tax revenue to the county will increase. But it’s important that the government judiciously use whatever it collects from the hands of the people.”
The 2nd deputy vice president of ICAN, Hajiya Queensley Seghosime, tasked the new leadership of SWIT to work with members to help spread the message of tax compliance to all and sundry.
