Flamingos Begin U-17 Women’s World Cup Campaign Against Poland

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup begins on Saturday(Today), in Morocco, and Nigeria’s Flamingos will open their campaign against Poland at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. Drawn in Group B alongside Poland, debutants Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR, Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side knows the opening match could shape its entire tournament. A winning start would settle nerves and put Nigeria in a strong position before tougher tests.

Nigeria arrives with momentum. The Flamingos won the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, winning all their matches and scoring freely, including a convincing final victory.
Olowookere has stressed that talent alone will not be enough in Morocco, urging his players to combine passion and power with discipline and smart decision-making.

The squad blends attacking flair with emerging experience. Captain Harmony Chidi leads the team and has already shown she can deliver in big moments, while Queen Joseph, Tosin Rafiu, Precious Oscar and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi provide options in attack. Several players have also tasted international football at older age levels, giving the Flamingos a core that should not be overawed by the World Cup stage.

Group B, however, is unforgiving. Poland are returning to the tournament with something to prove, Puerto Rico will be eager to impress on their debut, and Korea DPR remain the team to beat as defending champions. The opener against Poland is therefore pivotal. Victory would give Nigeria control of its destiny; defeat would leave little margin for error in the remaining group games.

Nigeria’s recent history at this level offers both encouragement and warning. The Flamingos won bronze at India 2022, beating Germany on penalties to reach the podium, but their last campaign ended in a heavy Round of 16 defeat to Italy.

That disappointment has fuelled a determination to go deeper this time, with the coach and players speaking openly about targeting the final rather than settling for another respectable run.

Tactically, the challenge is clear. Nigeria can score goals, but they must defend better against sharper opposition. With Korea DPR waiting in the final group fixture, the Flamingos cannot rely on outscoring teams alone. Organisation, recovery after setbacks and composure in both boxes will be just as important as flair.

As the Flamingos begun their campaign, expectation surrounds them but does not overwhelm them. Nigeria has never lacked talent at this age grade; what it needs now is consistency and calmness across three group games and beyond.

With a coach demanding discipline alongside creativity, and a squad eager to atone for their last campaign’s early exit, the Flamingos believe they can make a deep run. Today against Poland, the journey begins.
