Flood Disaster: Gov Buni, Swiss Ambassador Meet Over Strengthening Resilience, Risk Reduction

The Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni received in audience the delegation of Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Nicolas Lang at the Government House Damaturu where discussions centered on how to strengthen resilience and disaster reduction especially flooding.

The delegation led by the Swiss Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Siamak Rouhani announced a collaborative initiative with the Yobe State Government aimed at flood prevention and disaster risk reduction.

A statement issued by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said the Swiss delegation visiting Yobe state was due to the devastating floods of 2024 in order to explore areas of technical support and other opportunities for sustainable flood management.

Governor Buni has while speaking commended the Swiss government for their commitments in fostering international partnerships and addressing disaster risk challenges in Yobe State.

Buni equally applauded them for keying into the state government development plans, assuring that Yobe will continue providing an  enabling environment aimed at building the resilience of the communities in addition to implementing innovative infrastructure to safeguard lives and livelihoods across the state.

The Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Siamak Rouhani has while speaking commended the Yobe State commitments to building resilience assuring of collaboration for success.

The Ambassador said “We look forward to this collaboration and commend Yobe State’s leadership for prioritizing disaster management and climate adaptation for a stronger, more sustainable future,” Rouhani stressed.

The delegation, which includes Ms. Valeria Hutter, a Disaster Risk Reduction expert, and Mr. Nicolas Martin-Achard met with key stakeholders, including government officials, technical partners, UN agencies, and iNGOs, to identify actionable strategies for flood prevention and resilience building in the state.

The scooping mission by the Switzerland team was aimed at appreciating the Yobe State government for the continued partnership and creation of an enabling environment to address challenges on disaster management.
