Former national team player and goalkeeper trainer, Coach Amusa Adisa has paid glowing tribute to the late Green Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Fregene who died on Sunday.
Adisa noted that the manner of Fregene ‘s passing should elicit sobering thoughts as to how ex – internationals are treated in the country.
“I am saddened by the death of my friend and former teammate at the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) after Segun Odegbami broke the news. Fregene was part of the national team for the Mexico Olympics in 1968.
“Alongside some other illustrious players like Coach Tete of Nigerian Army, Adigun Durojaiye, ECN FC and Christian Nze, ACB, the late national team goalkeeper formed the core of Nigerian legend in football,” Adisa said.
He called for better welfare packages for former national team players.
LEADERSHIP Sports recalls that former international, Odegbami, last week raised alarm on the deteriorating health condition of Fregene, asking for assistance to cater for his hospital bills.
“The country should do more for its heroes. Only then can more people be willing to make sacrifices for Nigeria,” Coach Adisa said.
Fregene died after a protracted illness in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children, according to a report.
