The Gaya Emirate Council in Kano State has formally withdrawn the traditional title of ‘Wazirin Gaya’ from Alhaji Usman Alhaji, citing “unavoidable circumstances” for the decision.

The development was conveyed in an official letter to the former titleholder as revealed in a statement issued by Gaya Zonal Information Officer, Munzali Muhammad Hausawa.

Announcing the decision, the Secretary to the Gaya Emirate Council, Alhaji Bello Halilu, expressed the Council’s appreciation for Alhaji Usman’s service and contributions to the emirate. “The Council deeply appreciates his commitment, support to the traditional institution, and efforts in promoting the cultural heritage of Gaya,” the statement read.

LEADERSHIP reports Alhaji, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), was turbaned as Wazirin Gaya on January 26, 2020—an appointment that elevated him to the rank of one of the key kingmakers of the emirate. Prior to the position, he held the title of Walin Gaya following the creation of the four new emirates in the State under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The Emirate stated that the decision to withdraw the title reflected its continued commitment to preserving the sanctity, dignity, and integrity of traditional titles in accordance with established customs and values.

However, the withdrawal of the title comes just a week after Alhaji publicly accused the incumbent Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf administration of securing a $6.6 million external loan. He also alleged that the administration had “failed woefully” in its two years in office, with little to show in terms of governance and development.

The state government promptly refuted the claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

While the Gaya Emirate did not link the title withdrawal to Alhaji’s recent outbursts against the Kano State government, the timing of its decision, however, has fueled speculation.
