Governor Rev. Hyacinth Alia of Benue state has garnered national acclaim for his transformative leadership in information and communications technology (ICT), securing a prestigious place among Nigeria’s “50 Most Valuable Personalities (50MVPs) in the Digital Economy 2025.”
This recognition celebrates Alia’s visionary approach to integrating technology into governance and economic development, positioning Benue state as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. His administration’s ambitious reforms are not just promises but measurable actions that have propelled the state toward inclusive digital growth.
Since assuming office, Alia has spearheaded the establishment of vital institutions such as the Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, the Benue State Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC), and the Benue State Digital Infrastructure Services Management and Enforcement Agency (BENDISMEA). These entities have laid the foundation for streamlined digital policy, expanded ICT infrastructure, and enhanced service delivery.
Alia’s initiatives have trained over 50,000 civil servants and youths, equipping them with digital skills vital for today’s economy. His government has also launched 276 e-commerce hubs across the state’s council wards, providing platforms for local entrepreneurs and youth to market products and access technology training. Such efforts have directly contributed to job creation and economic diversification within Benue.
A standout feature of Alia’s reforms is the partnership with the Digital Bridge Institute, which has established digital training hubs in 23 local government areas, set to train thousands annually. Meanwhile, BDIC is championing projects including AI and coding programs in secondary schools, broadband expansion, and digital literacy campaigns. The state is also making strides toward regulatory innovation with pending applications for e-payment, ISP, and broadcasting licenses from federal agencies.
The 50 Most Valuable Personalities in Nigeria’s Digital Economy is an initiative by Knowhow Media, publishers of IT Edge News.Africa, and part of the larger West Africa Convergence Conference (WACC) platform. The 2025 edition will be held on May 22 at The Colosseum, Lagos, under the theme: “Consolidating Progress – Addressing New & Emerging Challenges in Nigeria’s Digital Economy.”
The chairman of the 2025 Nomination Committee, Dr. Sola Afolabi, in a press statement, said, “More than just a recognition, the 50MVPs in Nigeria’s Digital Economy is the gathering of Nigeria’s major change-makers and the charting of new pathways for economic growth.”
