Gusau Set To Resign As NFF President Today

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, is expected to formally resign from office today (Thursday), amid mounting pressure and weeks of speculation over the future of his administration.

Except for a last-minute change of mind, Gusau will announce his resignation at a world press conference scheduled for 12 noon at the NFF Secretariat, Sunday Dankaro Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The development is expected to bring to an end weeks of uncertainty surrounding the NFF leadership, with Gusau having previously dismissed reports suggesting that he was preparing to quit.

His administration has come under increasing criticism following Nigeria’s recent football setbacks, particularly the failure of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons to qualify for their respective FIFA World Cups.

The pressure has intensified in the build-up to the NFF’s scheduled elections in September, while the federation has also faced scrutiny from Nigeria’s anti-corruption and security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

There have also been reports of attempts to exert pressure on the NFF president, including claims that some members of the Executive Committee had resigned or were considering doing so.

Despite the controversy, Gusau’s political machinery for a possible re-election had reportedly remained active.

However, today’s press conference is expected to provide clarity on his position, the forthcoming 2026 NFF elections and the future of the federation’s current Executive Committee.
