It was pomp and pageantry as friends, associates, golfers and many other lovers of the lady captain of IBB International golf and Country Club Abuja, Joy Ikwue, played during the weekend in her own tournament, Lady Captain Cup, climaxing her tenure as captain of the Lady section of the prestigious golf club.
Wife of the former president of Senate, Helen David Mark, showered encomiums on outgoing Lady Captain Ikwue, saying she has done well.
She urged her not to turn her back on the club. “I want to first congratulate her because she has done well. Her tenure was eventful and I urge to continue the good work rather than thinking that since she has rounded up as Lady Captain, it is over. It is just the beginning and she has to give a helping hand to whoever succeeds her as next lady captain.
“It has been a very pleasurable one year and the incoming lady captain should continue from where joy leaves it off,” Mark said.
President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Otumba Olusegun Runsewe, was one of the participants at the glamorous golf event climaxing the official end of Joy Ikwue’s tenure as captain of IBB Golf lady section, extolled the virtues of Lady Captain Ikwue in bringing the lady forks together and set agenda for the incoming her successor to follow.
“Let me first and foremost commend the culture of having a lady captain cup. It is a statement of fact that a particular captain has contributed and achieved a lot during her tenure.
“For me, Joy has done very well, she was able to bring the lady forks together, coordinated well and set an agenda for the incoming lady captain to follow and maintain the standard. I’m happy that other golf courses will take cue from this standard,” Runsewe.
NGF boss who is also director-general of the National Council for Arts and Culture revealed that women membership of golf clubs across the country has increased significantly by 40 per cent.
“I can tell you that the membership of ladies has increased by 40% in the last one year in the golfing sector and it is across the country. Ladies are Keen on playing golf.”
Sunita K. Biju emerged the overall winner of the tournament.
Biju, who played on handicap 36, scored cumulative gross of 101 and 65 nett to beat the field of other contestants to the ultimate prize.
