The deputy governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has pledged support for grassroots sports development under the administration of Monday Okpebholo.

He stated that the government is keen on using sports as a means to empower youth by developing and initiating sporting activities across the 18 local government areas of the state.

According to a statement from his chief press secretary, Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor made the announcement while hosting Super Eagles and Fenerbahçe star, Bright Osayi, in Benin yesterday.

He noted that sports, particularly football, have evolved beyond mere competition and are now a lucrative business for young people. “This is why the government of Monday Okpebholo will prioritise sports development by making significant investments and attracting the right investments to the sector. For us as a government, there is no better way to curb youth restiveness, create employment opportunities, and improve the income of families than through sports development,” he asserted.

The deputy governor also pledged the government’s commitment to support Osayi in his initiative to give back to the community by organising an annual U13 football tournament.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles star emphasised the need for increased investment in grassroots football development in Nigeria. He remarked that while Nigeria boasts abundant football talent, a lack of opportunities and exposure continues to keep many future stars in the shadows.

“I think it’s an opportunity. There are a lot of very good footballers, but they’re not seen. Everyone has a story. We just need to listen and invest. My tournament is a platform to let these young boys showcase their talents,” he said.

Osayi-Samuel, who stressed the importance of scaling up initiatives like this, called on more stakeholders to invest in grassroots football.

“I’m here because I have a tournament for U13. It’s the final today, and I want to come and watch. I couldn’t make it in 2024, so this year I had to ensure I am here. This is my home. I’ll do anything to give my support. I love football, and I want to see new stories emerge from Benin,” he said.
