The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has flagged off a Mega Voter Registration Exercise in Lagos Central, in a renewed effort to expand voter access and deepen citizens’ participation in the country’s democratic process.

The exercise was formally launched at Ajele Sports Complex (Campos) in Lagos Island, on Tuesday with the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Ayobami Salami, leading members of the commission’s management team in the state.

INEC said the introduction of the Mega Centre is designed to tackle the persistent challenge of large crowds at conventional registration points, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

The initiative is expected to ease congestion, speed up the registration process, and improve service delivery through the deployment of additional personnel and equipment.

The commission added that strategically locating the Mega Centre will bring registration services closer to residents, enhancing accessibility and improving the overall voter experience.

The exercise, which commenced on Monday, April 7, 2026, will provide a wide range of services, including fresh registration for new voters, transfer of voter registration, correction or updating of personal details, and replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Speaking at the flag-off, Prof. Salami urged eligible residents, especially first-time voters, to take advantage of the opportunity to register and participate actively in shaping the nation’s future through the ballot.

He reiterated INEC’s commitment to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is disenfranchised.

The voter registration exercise will run until Saturday, April 12, 2026, across designated centres, operating daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., as the commission intensifies efforts to promote inclusivity and strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Meanwhile, opposition political parties and civil society organisations have kicked against the electoral body’s attempt to revalidate voter cards due to alleged complications in the proposed exercise.

This situation reportedly led to the temporary suspension of the nationwide voter registration last week. The exercise is expected to commence on April 13.
