Inter Milan cruised past Lazio 3-0 in the Italian Super Cup semifinal on Friday, securing their spot in the final against fierce rivals Napoli.
Marcus Thuram, Davide Frattesi, and Hakan Calhanoglu (penalty) each found the net for Simone Inzaghi’s men, who displayed a dominant performance at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Inter, the current Super Cup holders, will now face Napoli on Monday night, aiming for a third consecutive title and a record-breaking fifth for Inzaghi himself.
“It was a great performance, we had a lot of fun out there,” said Nicolo Barella. “We’ve got to the final which is what we wanted, now we need to recover in time for the match with Napoli which will be very difficult.”
Inter’s dominant display, with numerous chances created and shots on target, highlighted their status as Serie A frontrunners, leaving Lazio struggling to keep up. Barella and Lautaro Martinez both rattled the crossbar, further solidifying Inter’s offensive dominance.
Lazio, on the other hand, offered little in response, barely threatening Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal. Their lackluster performance contrasted starkly with Inter’s intensity and purpose.
This season’s Super Cup marks the first edition featuring four teams, with the top two from Serie A and the Italian Cup finalists battling for the trophy. Despite the novelty, the tournament saw lukewarm crowds in both semifinals, with a two-thirds empty stadium for Napoli’s win over Fiorentina and limited enthusiasm in Riyadh for Inter’s clash against Lazio.
Inter, fresh off their dominant victory, now look forward to Monday’s final showdown against Napoli, where they aim to lift the Super Cup and set their sights on further success in the Serie A title race and the Champions League.
