Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Senator Neda Imasuen, has formally resigned from the Labour Party (LP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal crises and the need for political relevance for his constituents.

The defection was announced during Wednesday’s Senate plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read a letter from the Senator conveying his decision.

In the letter, Imasuen said his defection followed “extensive consultations” with his constituents and key political actors in Edo South.

“I write to respectfully notify the distinguished Senate through the office of the Senate President of my resignation from the Labour Party (LP) and my decision to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter stated.

According to him, the move ws aimed at positioning his senatorial district for greater visibility and opportunities under the ruling party.

“This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents, my political stakeholders, my supporters across Edo South Senatorial District who have expressed their desire to have me enter a party that will give our people national prominence and political relevance.”

Senator Imasuen also cited deep-rooted internal challenges within the Labour Party as a major factor in his decision to leave.

“My defection is necessitated by irreconcilable internal crises and leadership challenges within the Labour Party which have hampered my capacity to effectively represent and deliver on the true mandate of governance to the good people of Edo South,” he added.

He said his move to the APC was driven by a desire to align with the “development and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration,” led by President Bola Tinubu.

Despite the switch in party affiliation, Imasuen assured his constituents of his continued dedication to public service and democratic values.

“I remain fully committed to the service of my constituents and the democratic ideals of this Senate,” he declared, requesting that his letter be publicly read and documented in the Senate records.

Senator Imasuen’s defection adds to the growing list of lawmakers who have left the Labour Party amid ongoing internal wrangling, ahead of the 2027 general election.
