Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, has officially confirmed his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), ending weeks of speculation.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday, Senator Sumaila declared that the rumours surrounding his political move were indeed true.
“Yes, it is true — the rumours regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency.
“I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured,” the senator wrote.
The announcement comes barely weeks after Sumaila, alongside other notable NNPP lawmakers from Kano including Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Aliyu Sani Madaki, and Badamasi Ayuba held a closed-door meeting with chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje in what was widely seen as a prelude to their exit from the NNPP.
As of the time of filing this report, the NNPP has yet to issue an official reaction to the senator’s announcement.
