France captain Kylian Mbappé heads into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with several major milestones within reach as the forward looks to further cement his place among football’s greatest goalscorers.

The 27-year-old is on the verge of becoming France’s all-time leading scorer. Two more goals at the tournament would see him surpass former striker Olivier Giroud, who currently holds the men’s national team record with 57 goals.

Mbappé is also closing in on another French mark at the World Cup. A further two goals would take him past the legendary Just Fontaine, whose tally of 13 goals remains the highest by a French player in the tournament’s history.

The France star could also etch his name into the global record books. Five goals at the tournament would enable him to overtake former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 goals is the highest in men’s FIFA World Cup history.

Another piece of history awaits if Mbappé finds the net in the final. Doing so would make him the first player to score five goals in World Cup finals.

Already one of the most prolific forwards of his generation, Mbappé arrives at the 2026 tournament with the opportunity to rewrite both French and World Cup history.
