The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested two suspects following a raid on the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos over the alleged repackaging of expired drinks and production of adulterated wines and hot drinks.
The agency said the operation, conducted on Tuesday, followed intelligence reports about activities involving the relabelling of expired products for sale and the manufacture of adulterated alcoholic beverages.
Speaking after the seizure, NAFDAC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Christiana Obiazikwor, said she accompanied the enforcement team to demonstrate the commitment of the agency’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, to tackling fake, adulterated and expired products.
According to her, NAFDAC conducts daily raids and seizures to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers.
“NAFDAC DG, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, is very passionate about tackling fake, adulterated or expired products in the country, and we want everyone to know that NAFDAC has on a daily basis been embarking on raids and seizures to prevent them from circulating in our markets,” she said.
Obiazikwor added that the agency remained committed to identifying those behind the activities and urged Nigerians to support its enforcement efforts by reporting suspected manufacturers and distributors of fake products.
She appealed to members of the public to provide intelligence reports, assuring them that NAFDAC would protect the identities of whistle-blowers.
On his part, the Deputy Enforcement Officer, Kunle Ojo, condemned the alleged production of fake drinks, warning that the activities could endanger consumers’ lives as the Christmas season approaches.
“As Christmas is fast approaching, these evil-minded individuals want to keep destroying lives with fake products, and we are here to ensure that they are arrested from such acts,” Ojo said.
He said the operation was made possible by intelligence reports and called on Nigerians to provide information that could help the agency identify and apprehend suspected producers of adulterated drinks.
