NGO Supports Borno With Reproductive Health Commodities

A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Plan International Nigeria, has donated cholera response kits, drugs and reproductive health commodities to the Borno State Government to support ongoing health interventions in communities affected by cholera outbreaks and humanitarian crisis.

The items, with funding from German government, were handed over on Friday in Maiduguri to the Borno State Ministry of Health and Human Services during a brief ceremony attended by the ministry’s officials and members of staff of the NGO.

The director of Operations, Plan International Nigeria, Victoria Chenge, said the donation was part of efforts to strengthen the state’s response to cholera outbreak and improve access to sexual and reproductive health services.

She noted that Plan International Nigeria has been working in Borno for years, saying that this particular project was funded by German government.

She said, “We are pleased to hand over these items to the Borno State Ministry of Health and Human Services to support ongoing efforts to tackle cholera outbreak in the State.

“The donated items include cholera kits response, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) commodities that has been provided to support health service delivery in Borno State.

“The donated items include essential medicines such as Azithromycim, Doxycycline, Ceftriaxone, Metronidazole, Ofloxacin, Clotrimazole, Nystatin, Vaginal Pessaries and Gentamicin.

“The donation also includes reproductive health commondities such as male condoms, Microgynon tablets, and Exluton tablets. Additionally, critical medical supplies, including Ringer’s Lactate infusions, IV cannuals of various sizes, and IV giving sets, form part of this support.”

In his remarks, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr Shettima Maina Mohammed, commended Plan International for the donation, saying that the items would be deployed to the hot spot communities where there is still cholera cases.

“The items would be judiciously utilised to treat patients affected by cholera. The provision of the commodities is timely and definitely, it will be deployed to all cholera treatment centres for case management. It will save lives,” Dr Mohammed said.
