Nigerians have taken to social media to react after a heavy storm reportedly pulled down a campaign billboard bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima in Ogun State.

The billboard, which carried the slogan “Courageous Leadership for Nigeria,” became a subject of political commentary on X, with some users interpreting the incident as a symbol of opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, while others criticised the quality of infrastructure and the preparedness of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Omoyele Sowore, activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, wrote: “NATURE ABHORS TINUBU!

“Even nature seems to have had enough of Tinubu @officialABAT! A powerful rainstorm brought down his campaign billboard.

“For those who believe in symbolism, the image speaks volumes; the wind of change has spoken. Nature has sent its own signal!”

Similarly, @Unkleayo suggested that opposition parties could use the incident in their campaigns, writing: “I hope the opposition parties in Nigeria know what to do with this clip. Good material for the rest of the month. Translate into all languages. It’s not everything they’ll be teaching you people.”

Another user, @sabi_engineer7, criticised the APC, saying: “As simple as an advertising board, APC can’t do anything right.”

@victorrichman also linked the incident to corruption, writing: “The eventual cure to corruption is self annihilation. With all the resources, they couldn’t do anything right.”

For @josiahidam, the billboard’s collapse represented what the user described as the vulnerability of the president’s political mandate.

“Everyone standing on the mandate will collapse soon like this billboard. It’s a shaky mandate and a sinking sand. Choose you this day where you want to stand? On the solid rock or shaky shaky daddy?” the user wrote.

Another user, @ammychddy, made a reference to the 2027 elections, writing: “Lolllll…..even the rigging, they will fail at it. Then result to fight. Once fight start pilots don’t fly any plain. Everybody should head to airport. And book your flight. Lol”

However, not all reactions focused on the APC. Some users argued that opposition parties had failed to turn criticism of the ruling party into effective political strategies.

@Dbabaearly wrote: “Even if oppo party use 1,000 clips, nothing go change. Nigeria is a failed state, and that it will remain until it reverts back to its natural state before the british tampered with it.”

Similarly, @hugophilz criticised opposition parties, saying: “Useless bunch of opposition. This administration score sheet in every sector is enough content. But they aren’t tapping in.”

@dfishiro also blamed the opposition, writing: “The opposition is the problamo bc with all the flaws, they are not oppositioning.”

Another user, @askNugwa, called for a shift from criticism to political organisation.

“Criticism and Strategy. Choose wisely. What strategy are the other parties putting in place? Talk talk talk and APC is busy creating strategy while young people creates criticism. Let’s do better,” the user wrote.

Meanwhile, @bobdaveomoaghe dismissed the political interpretation of the incident, writing: “Hope you know AI isn’t in support of any candidate and can also be used against any. Lol. Jagaban till 2031.”

Other reactions focused on the perceived quality of public infrastructure and concerns about safety.

@omobolaOduntan called for an investigation into billboard safety, writing: “They need to investigate billboard companies and ensure proper safety measures are in place. If a billboard were to fall on someone, how could they possibly compensate for the damage and guarantee that something like this never happens again?”

Similarly, @Edvinng described the incident as dangerous, saying: “This is very dangerous though. This could kee someone nearby, thank God it didn’t fall when that truck was passing by.”

Drawing a comparison with the country’s electricity challenges, @Eshedrack_Ab wrote: “Na so we dey see national grid dey do when small breeze blow.”

Meanwhile, @harmlessHQ jokingly attributed the incident to supporters of Peter Obi, popularly known as Obidients, suggesting they had invoked the rain to bring down the billboard. “I know the people behind this mishap. E no pass Obidients. Na dem invoke this rain to scatter Tinubu’s billboard. I’m not afraid that they can invoke rain, I’m only afraid at how their prayers are being answered. I’m glad we have Pastor Taiye Taiwo, we’ll call him to cast and bind the Obidients during the January polls,” the user wrote.

Another user,  @Believe9a also referenced wrote
“Dog wey nor get hand God dey help am drive fly from he ear. Na God dey help NDC dey destroy APC billboard”

Another user, @joyboy5c2, questioned how the billboard could be brought down while a nearby bucket of paint reportedly remained standing.

“How come the wind is able to blow away a whole billboards and a bucket of paint is standing so firm…wtf is going on on this country…” the user wrote.

@akanmi_julius also linked the incident to concerns about road construction, writing: “That’s how rain has wash off all the pajawiri roads they built this year. APC with doing substandard projects.”

In a separate reaction, @crownbeetalks made a reference to Tinubu’s political record in Lagos, writing: “Person wey no fit build better billboard for himself built a whole Lagos. Ori iya yin ti gbale.”
