NiMet Warns Lagos, Coastal States Of Flash Flood As Heavy Rainfall Persists

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted residents of Lagos and other coastal states to a heightened risk of flash flooding on Tuesday, following forecasts of widespread rainfall across southern Nigeria.

The alert was contained in the agency’s Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, which predicted sustained rainfall across the southern region throughout the day.

The agency said continuous rainfall could trigger flash floods in coastal and low-lying communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along Nigeria’s southern coastline, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Part of the forecast noted that “thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected in the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.”

NiMet added that rainfall would intensify later in the day, with moderate rainfall expected across the entire southern region during the afternoon and evening.

According to the agency, “Moderate rainfall is expected across the entire Southern region, with a high likelihood of flash flooding in coastal areas, especially Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.”

Meanwhile, in the northern region, the agency forecast morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states. It added that thunderstorms would later spread to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi states.

For the North Central region, NiMet predicted predominantly cloudy conditions in the morning, with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Benue States.

Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected across the region later in the day.

The agency advised residents in affected areas to monitor weather conditions closely, warning that strong winds may precede thunderstorms.

Motorists were urged to exercise caution while driving during rainfall and periods of reduced visibility, while residents were warned against driving or walking through floodwaters.

NiMet also cautioned members of the public to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning strikes.

For the aviation sector, the agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
