Ogun State government will plant two million trees in 2024 to preserve the environment and stem the tide of climate change in the state.

The state commissioner for forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, made this known while speaking with newsmen during a tree-planting advocacy campaign organised by Waradi El Shadai Creations, a group pushing for a greener environment, in collaboration with the state government as part of activities marking the 2024 World Environment Day.

Oludotun, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Timothy Olatunji, explained that the state government has continued to prioritise the environment and forest reserves by planting trees to save human lives.

He enjoined every resident of the state to take responsibility for achieving a better society in which everyone could live a healthy life.

In his remarks, the environmental enthusiast Waradi Etuk explained that the rationale behind tree planting is to promote green infrastructure in society. He stressed that global warming and climate change are real and added that the time for everyone to take action is now.

Etuk further stated that his organisation strongly aligned with the ideals of the United Nations (UN), thereby taking steps to restore and preserve the environment. He emphasised that “if nothing happens, the earth will be too hot for habitation.”
