Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba race, was agog at the weekend as eminent personalities from across Nigeria converged to celebrate the installation of Mrs Olufunso Amosun as Yeye Moremi Oodua,
The installation of the wife of former Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, was performed by the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, at Afenworo Square, Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife.
Dignitaries at the event included Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel; former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN); former minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro; former deputy governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore and speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi described Mrs Amosun as a compassionate and selfless woman whose lifestyle reflects the virtues of Moremi Ajasoro.
He narrated the heroic story of Moremi Ajasoro, who sacrificed greatly for the liberation and protection of the Yoruba people, noting that the title of Yeye Moremi is reserved for women of exceptional character, integrity and service to humanity.
In his remarks, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by his wife, Bola, commended the Ooni for sustaining the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba race and for using the throne to promote unity and development across the country.
He also congratulated Chief (Mrs) Olufunso Amosun on her installation, describing her as a woman of virtue and compassion, and extolling her outstanding commitment to humanity through her numerous philanthropic activities.
Also speaking, Governor Seyi Makinde, who stressed the need for greater unity among Yoruba leaders irrespective of political affiliations, expressed delight at the array of dignitaries at the event without political bias.
Earlier in her acceptance speech, the newly installed Yeye Moremi Oodua expressed profound gratitude to God and the Ooni of Ife for the extraordinary honour bestowed upon her.
