The Olabisi Onabanjo University Students’ Union has issued a strong call to the school management to uphold and respect the Students’ Union Government’s Constitution, particularly in matters of urgency affecting the student body.
The Union has emphasized the importance of the management remaining neutral, apolitical, and approachable, ensuring a fair and unbiased approach to all matters without any fear of bias.
It’s essential to note that there has been a dissolution and reconstitution of the Independent Electoral Commission (ECO) and the Petition Electoral Commission (PECO).
Additionally, the leaders of the senate have remained silent on this issue, underscoring their commitment to addressing it justly and in accordance with the constitution as intellectuals.
To address the various misleading circulars and claims, a joint statement signed by Senate President Sen. Adetunji Pelumi, Deputy Senate President Adeoye Enoch, Clerk Adekunle Adeshina, and Chief Whip Ademiluwa Abidemi, they clarified that a section of the constitution outlines the process for appointing the OOUSUG Judicial Council.
They further explained, “Section 43(2) also states that the appointment of a person to the office of the Chief Justice of the Union shall be made by the President of the Union on the recommendation of the Law Students’ Society of the University, subject to confirmation by the SHS.”
The statement went on to highlight that the Students’ House of Senate was unable to constitute this arm of government during the Feyi-led administration for unforeseen reasons. Therefore, they found it surprising that someone claimed to be the head of such a council.
The leaders of the Students’ House of Senate made it clear that no one is authorized to refer to themselves as the Judicial Council’s head because it was not legally constituted by the Students’ House of Senate (35th Hallowed Chamber).
They also voiced their concerns regarding the school management’s interference in the constitution of the ECO and PECO, citing these actions as unconstitutional and biased.
In conclusion, the leaders of the Senate assured the student populace that they are working diligently to protect the Students’ Union and its constitution from manipulation and abuse. They requested collective moral support and prayers in their pursuit of justice and the preservation of the union’s values.
Despite potential challenges, they remain optimistic that their efforts to uphold what is morally right will stand the test of time. They also suspect that the management may seek to assert control over the Union without resistance from the student body.
