The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for collective efforts to eradicate poverty, stressing the need to expand access to education, healthcare, skills acquisition, decent livelihoods and economic opportunities, particularly for vulnerable families.
The First Lady made the call in a message to mark the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on Saturday, October 17.
She said building a society where everyone could live with dignity and hope, access meaningful opportunities and realise their full potential required a shared commitment to tackling poverty.
According to her, sustained collaboration, compassion and effective interventions are essential to creating pathways out of poverty and promoting shared prosperity.
The First Lady emphasised the importance of ensuring that vulnerable families had access to essential services and opportunities that would enable them to improve their living conditions.
She noted that efforts to eradicate poverty must go beyond addressing immediate needs to creating opportunities for individuals and families to become self-reliant and achieve their potential.
The 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is being marked under the theme, “Dignity, Opportunity, and Shared Prosperity.”
The theme underscores the importance of building an inclusive society in which everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity, participate in economic and social development, and benefit from shared prosperity.
Mrs Tinubu urged continued commitment to initiatives that promote human dignity, improve access to essential services and create sustainable opportunities for vulnerable populations.
She wished Nigerians a happy International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
