Rivers: Ex-Chair Advocates Creation Of 3 Local Govts From Oyigbo

Former chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu, has called for the creation of three local government areas out of the existing Oyigbo LGA.

Ajaelu, who made the call while speaking with LEADERSHIP Sunday in Port Harcourt, said Oyigbo Urban alone is large enough to warrant the creation of two new LGAs.

He said, “Let me use this medium to call on the people of Ndoki and Asa to go out and register as voters. Oyigbo is overdue for the creation of three LGAs from the existing one.

“I am appealing to them because there is no rocket science about it. It is your voting strength that determines whether more LGAs will be created from Oyigbo.

“We want three more LGAs from Oyigbo. We are big, and honestly, we are big. Oyigbo Urban alone can comfortably give two LGAs.”

Ajaelu, who is also the South-South youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), vowed to pursue legally the proposed renaming of Oyigbo LGA to its conclusion.

“It depends on what the boundary adjustment committee comes up with. There are villages in Ndoki that can be found in Akwa Ibom State. It is merely a boundary adjustment based on natural boundaries, so it doesn’t mean anything.

“Above all, we were born to live here by God Almighty. Those boundaries have existed naturally; it is human greed and manipulation that create crises where none exist. Our forefathers lived here peacefully, and I don’t see why we should create problems where there are none.”

The call for the change of the name of Oyigbo Local Government Area, he said was his personal opinion.
