In a disturbing development in Ile-Ife, a 22-year-old scavenger, Jimoh Saai, has been remanded by a magistrate for allegedly damaging a CCTV camera worth N2 million and stealing other items from a farm in Ipetumodu.
The offences, committed on March 11, 2026, around 1:05 a.m., included burglary, forcible entry, damage, and theft.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the prosecutor, Inspector Irewole Jimoh, explained that Saai unlawfully entered the electric power house of Adedeji Fola, the complainant, intending to steal. During the break-in, he damaged a CCTV camera and allegedly stole eight batteries valued at N1.2 million, as well as a sprayer box worth N100,000.
Appearing before Magistrate Abosede Sarumi, Saai pleaded guilty to the four-count charge but was unrepresented. The court subsequently remanded him to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ile-Ife, and adjourned the case until March 30 for further mention.
This case highlights the dangers of resorting to crime in moments of desperation or opportunity. While the short-term allure of easy money may be tempting, the consequences—including loss of freedom, permanent criminal records, and social stigma—are severe. Saai’s story serves as a cautionary tale to youths and adults alike: no material gain is worth jeopardising your future.
The authorities stressed the importance of lawful conduct and personal responsibility. Opportunities for legitimate work and entrepreneurship exist for those willing to pursue them, even in challenging circumstances.
Resorting to theft and property destruction may seem like a solution, but it only compounds personal and societal problems.
As Saai awaits trial, Nigerians, especially the youths, are reminded that crime does not pay. Every individual has a role to play in fostering safe, responsible and law-abiding environments. By making wise choices and respecting property rights, citizens can avoid unnecessary brushes with the law and contribute positively to society’s growth.
