Tevenet Hails Lookman As Atlético’s ‘Most Impactful’ Signing In Seven Years

Atlético Madrid assistant coach Luis Tevenet has heaped praise on Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman, calling him the club’s most transformative signing in nearly a decade. Since arriving from Serie A side Atalanta during the winter transfer window, the 28-year-old has wasted no time making his mark on Diego Simeone’s team.

Lookman’s statistics speak for themselves: in 18 appearances across all competitions, he has bagged seven goals and provided four assists a direct contribution every other game on average. But beyond the numbers, Tevenet emphasized how the Nigerian international has reshaped Atlético’s attacking dynamics.

Speaking to Spanish sports daily AS, Tevenet highlighted Lookman’s pace as a missing ingredient that the squad had long demanded. “With the arrival of Lookman, he brings the speed that the team needed,” the assistant coach said.

He also pointed to the winger’s ability to make Atlético’s offense far less predictable: “For me, he has been one of the club’s most important signings in the last six or seven years. Now Atleti is much more ambiguous on both sides.”

By “ambiguous,” Tevenet referred to Lookman’s versatility—capable of cutting inside from the left, driving to the byline, or even drifting centrally—which has made defending against Simeone’s side considerably harder for opponents.

The coach’s comments underscore how a single winter arrival has injected creativity, unpredictability, and directness into a team often known for its defensive solidity.

Lookman, who previously shone for Atalanta including a historic Europa League final hat-trick, seems to have found a new home in the Spanish capital.

And if Tevenet’s assessment holds true, the signing could go down as a masterstroke for Atlético’s board ending a seven-year stretch without a recruit of such decisive impact.
