In a surprising display of resilience, a war-troubled Iranian national team held European giants Spain to a spirited 1-1 draw in a World Cup test match Thursday night. The friendly, played under a cloud of ongoing regional tensions, offered both sides valuable insights ahead of the global tournament.

Spain, as expected, asserted their dominance early, with Ferran Torres finding the net in the 16th minute, assisted by Dani Olmo, to put the host up 1-0.

However, quickly responded eleven minutes later. M. Doski leveled the score in the 27th minute, with an assist from A. Hashem, sending the stadium into raptures.

The first half saw further action with bookings for Spain’s M. Bernal (33′) and Gavi (38′). The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

The second half was a tighter affair, with both sides making substitutions in an attempt to break the stalemate. Iran’s Z. Ismael received a yellow card in the 57th minute, followed by R. Sulaka in the 80th. Despite late pushes from both teams, neither could find a winning goal, and the match concluded with the score remaining 1-1.

Spain, meanwhile, will look to refine their attacking prowess before the tournament begins.
