Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated 54 construction machines acquired by the Edo State government for distribution to the state’s 18 local government areas, describing the investment as a decisive step in grassroots growth.
At the ceremony in Benin City yesterday, Wike applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritising rural infrastructure and empowering local administrations with the tools needed to deliver development directly to communities.
He said strengthening local economies is critical to national progress and commended the governor for aligning state initiatives with federal development efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Okpebholo described the deployment of the equipment as a key component of his administration’s SHINE Agenda, emphasising that development must extend beyond urban centres to villages and wards in the state.
According to him, the machines will be used to rehabilitate rural roads, improve drainage systems, enhance sanitation and accelerate small-scale infrastructure projects at the council level.
“These are working tools, not ceremonial assets,” the governor said, stressing that the equipment belongs to the people of Edo State and must be managed responsibly, transparently, and efficiently for public benefit.
Also addressing the gathering, Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole of Edo North said the initiative reflects a people-centered approach to governance, noting that visible development at the grassroots strengthens public trust and improves livelihoods.
Representing the council chairmen, Hon. Sunny Ekpeson, chairman of Etsako East local government area and head of ALGON in the state, described the ceremony as evidence of renewed administrative vitality at the local level.
He expressed support for the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commended the governor for fostering cooperation rather than interference in council affairs.
The Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, maintained that the administration’s performance has reinforced the party’s standing in the state, urging opposition parties to support development-driven governance.
Other dignitaries at the event included the deputy governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, secretary to the state government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, members of the state legislature, local government chairmen and party stakeholders.
