Wrexham Celebrates Okonkwo’s Maiden Super Eagles Call-Up

In a moment of immense pride for both player and club, Wrexham AFC have celebrated goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo following his first senior international call-up for the Nigerian national team. The 24-year-old shot-stopper was named in head coach Eric Chelle’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament scheduled to take place in London this summer.

The Championship club took to social media to issue a statement congratulating Okonkwo on the significant achievement. The call-up comes just weeks after FIFA formally cleared the London-born goalkeeper to represent Nigeria in April, having previously played for England at youth levels from U-15 to U-18. His eligibility through his Nigerian parents ultimately paved the way for the international switch.

“Congratulations to Arthur Okonkwo on receiving his first call-up to the Nigeria squad ahead of the Unity Cup,” Wrexham posted on X, marking the milestone for their towering 6ft 6in keeper.

Nigeria will commence their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe at The Valley on May 26, with the final and third-place play-off scheduled for May 30. The other semi-final will see Jamaica face India. Following the London tournament, the Super Eagles will travel to Warsaw for a friendly against Poland on June 3, before concluding their camp with a match against Portugal in Leiria on June 10.

Since joining Wrexham on a permanent deal in 2024 after departing Arsenal, Okonkwo has become a cornerstone of the Welsh club’s remarkable ascent through English football’s pyramid. In the 2025/26 season, he made 39 league appearances, helping Wrexham solidify their position in the Championship with a string of crucial saves during a demanding campaign.

The goalkeeper’s football journey began at Arsenal’s Hale End academy at the age of eight, and he signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in 2021. However, limited first-team opportunities at the Emirates led to loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz. His move to Wrexham in September 2023 followed the retirement of veteran Ben Foster, and he has since established himself as a fan favourite.

The Super Eagles have long sought consistent stability between the posts. Current first-choice Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye remain in contention, but Okonkwo’s arrival adds fresh competition and provides Chelle with additional depth as Nigeria prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Before receiving the official call-up, Okonkwo shared his anticipation about joining the squad, singling out AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze as the teammate he was most eager to meet.

“If I was going to choose someone on the team, it would be Chukwueze because he seems mad and funny. I don’t know him personally, but I know he will be good vibes. I like it on the bus when you have someone who doesn’t stop talking,” Okonkwo told the Super Eagles media team.

However, Eric Chelle has confirmed that senior players will not feature at the Unity Cup, meaning Okonkwo will have to wait for a later opportunity to connect with his new teammates. Nigeria are the defending champions of the invitational tournament, having beaten Ghana and Jamaica to lift the trophy last year.
