An aspirant for the vacant House of Representatives seat in Kebbi State, Abubakar Jibrin Yakubu, has applauded the timely passage of the 2024 budget.
Recall that the National Assembly passed the budget in December 2023, after which President Bola Tinubu signed it into law on January 1st, 2024.
While speaking to journalist in Abuja yesterday, Yakubu lauded President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for approving the new budget early.
“In the past, we would see the budget signed when the year was almost over. But this time, due to the President’s push for swift passage, the budget was approved very early,” Yakubu noted.
He believes the expedited budget process will allow citizens across Nigeria to benefit from new spending programs much sooner compared to previous years.
On security, Yakubu advocated strengthening of the Police to tackle insecurity, instead of creating state forces which could be abused.
“This is this is my personal opinion. The reason why people are against call for state policies, is possibilities of abuse by the state government and by other people in the state.
“State police is a nice idea. But the challenge that most people foresee is the possibility of this abuse of power.
“So for me, instead of creating a state police, the real police should be strengthened very well, in a way that they can respond to all the security problems we have in Nigeria.
“Studies were carried out about the challenges of the Nigerian police let the government study these problems, tried to implement the recommendations made.
“I believe if this is properly done, these challenges that necessitated people to call for State Police will no longer be there” he recommended.
Yakubu is vying to fill the vacant House of Reps seat for Yauri, Shanga and Ngaski constituencies in an upcoming by-election.
