The Federal Emergency Management Agency in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has disclosed that over 116 houses were submerged after the heavy downpour on Friday.
Speaking during a visit to the scene, the director general of the agency, Dr. Abbas Idriss, noted that no life was lost in the incident.
Noting that the flood was caused by infractions on the water channel, he appealed to residents whose houses were built on the water channel to relocate.
He said the estate is on the water channel and is therefore vulnerable to floods. He thanked all stakeholders and residents for their efforts and cooperation to ensure that no life was lost.
He dismissed social media reports alleging that a resident of the estate was missing in the flood.
While stressed that the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had predicted heavy floods in the FCT this rainy season and urged residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.
Meanwhile, speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has expressed concern over the incident.
Abbas said it was highly regrettable that people going about their normal lives with their families found themselves in such a difficult situation.
In a statement by his adviser on media and publicity, Musa Krishi, the speaker sympathised with residents of the estate over the incident.
He said relevant government agencies had before the rainy season alerted the public on the possibility of floods in some parts of the country, adding that the public must heed such warnings.
Abbas called on the authorities to prevent a reoccurrence.
