A Calabar, Cross River State Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of Inspector Effiong Bassey, the police officer who shot at passersby on Sunday in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, pending the hearing of the case on April 14.

Bassey had on Sunday morning opened fire on passersby after a heated argument with his colleagues around Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters, killing a 41-year-old mother of one, Mrs. Ijeoma Wilson, the wife to another policeman while others sustained various degree of bullet injuries.

However, Officer in Charge of Legal, Superintendent Otu Ubangah of the state Police Command approached the court seeking a motion ex parte to remand the defendant while waiting for legal advice from the state Prosecutor.
