Through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Lagos State government unveiled bold plans to achieve universal energy access, improve electricity reliability, and stimulate local manufacturing of power infrastructure components.

The state’s commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Biodun Ogunleye revealed this at the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing to commemorate Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s six years in office at Alausa, Ikeja.

The commissioner explained that clean transport energy is being developed under President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential CNG Initiative. This initiative converts fuel vehicles to CNG to cushion the effect of removing fuel subsidies, which led to high fuel pump prices in the country.

He said, “IOGC provides sustainable, clean, and reliable energy through the supply, development of infrastructure, and gas marketing to domestic and transportation industries across the state’s five divisions.

“For the clean transport initiative, the administration of Sanwo-Olu, through IOGC, is committed to sustainable mobility. The administration has made significant strides to promote CNG as a cleaner alternative energy for the transportation sector.

“Meanwhile, 65 vehicles have been converted to CNG so far, while 550 which are ongoing for conversion will be completed by July 2025, 85technicians already trained, 17 master train the trainer technicians completed 316 training hours, have been certified, while 17 CNG stations as well as 11 CNG delivery trucks will be operational by October 2025.”

Apart from the 17 targeted CNG stations, there are five independent stations in the state. The state government is committed to ensuring that safety is not compromised.”

He pointed out that key among the Ministry’s forward-looking initiatives is the full implementation of the Lagos Electricity Market structure under the Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024, which will involve licensing independent electricity distribution companies, supporting embedded generation, and operationalising the Lagos Independent System Operator (LISO) to stabilise the power ecosystem.

“We are taking deliberate steps to transition Lagos into a 24-hour economy through reliable and sustainable energy solutions,” Ogunleye stated.

He said the ministry is also working to complete and energise eight interconnected mini-grids in underserved communities, with plans to scale up such interventions across rural and riverine areas.
