The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is more determined than ever to end terrorism and banditry in the country.

Senator Akume, who spoke at the Peace and Security Summit Award in Abuja, called on the media to support the Federal Government through balanced reporting and to assist the military and other stakeholders in the fight against insecurity.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the SGF, Mr Aminu Sani Yar’Gaya, he said; “We are concerned about the reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country.

We are not saying attacks should not be reported, but all sides should be reflected.

“Stories of terrorism should be reported in a fair manner, reflecting the efforts of our gallant military as well as the experiences of the victims. Government is doing a lot in the fight against terrorism and banditry, and we are determined to do more.”

Convener of the summit, Jennifer Serrano, said the event could not have come at a better time, as the country is facing serious security challenges.

According to her, all Nigerians must come together to support the government’s efforts to bring terrorism and banditry to an end.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Honourable Benson Jimi, who also spoke at the event, said the legislature remains open to partnerships that will strengthen laws, deepen national cohesion and ensure lasting peace for generations to come.

Represented by his deputy, Honourable Ahmad Alitu Kalambaina, he said that at a time when the nation faces deepening security and social challenges, the gathering of peace scholars, policymakers and practitioners is not only timely but also essential.

He said; “In our society, peace and security are not just words; they are the true foundation of unity. Without peace, our laws and policies cannot work. As lawmakers, we make laws that safeguard everyone. We must build a country where every person feels safe in their home and community.

“Hosting this summit underscores the recognition that the primary responsibility of government is to maintain law and order. By government, I mean the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary.

“This security summit is an important part of the ongoing engagement with stakeholders on the security concerns of our nation.Let me say that today’s event represents a significant step towards redefining the national security framework for the peace and unity of our country.

“Effective security in any society depends on the level of security consciousness among citizens and the strength of the understanding that exists between the security agencies and the community.

“Therefore, our contribution to security and crime prevention in our country has become even more imperative, considering our current national security challenges, in which kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, transnational crimes, terrorism and other organised crimes have evolved to threaten our national values and the overall progress of our nation,” he added
