The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Volunteer for Democracy and Good Governance have condemned alleged perpetration of violence and threatening of the judiciary by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Speaking at a press conference in Kano State, the leader of the group, and former secretary to the state government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, condemned the NNPP for its onslaught against democracy and rule of law.Â
He described governance as the job of the three arms of government, that include, executive, legislators and judiciary for which the judiciary gives the solution whenever there is conflict.Â
He therefore called on the NNPP to seek redress through judicial means and not by using violence and intimidation.Â
“Resorting to the courts for legal redress by parties, is part of the election process where the aggrieved obtain justice through legal redress and rule of law.
“However, we wish to reiterate our growing concern on recent happenings in Kano state over attempts by NNPP to foment trouble, while the court process is ongoing. At this point we must appreciate the courts for their professionalism and maturity in dispensation of justice despite threats of violence and intimidation to members of the bench by the NNPP government.Â
“Volunteer for Democracy and Good Government hereby condemn in strongest terms any act of violence, intimidation and threat to lives or bloodshed in any form or manner to anybody.
“The call for mass protest by the government of NNPP and its leadership is alien and uncalled for in this 21st Century” he stated.Â
The group also condemned the moves by the NNPP government and leadership for approaching foreign embassies and other international organisations for intervention.
“This unwanted action also, is in contradiction with international norms and diplomacy as well as charter signed in series of bilateral/multilateral agreements that states that internal affairs of member nations should remain internal.
“The only acceptable way to peace is justice through due process of law. The unprecedented desperation exhibited by the NNPP Government is unfortunate and they should blame themselves for their misfortunes” the group stated.Â
The APC secretary in the state, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, expressed appreciation for the call by the group and called on the public to remain calm as they await the final judgement by the Supreme Court.
