Nigerian content creator Asherkine has raised more than ₦36 million in less than 48 hours to support the medical treatment of 14-year-old Idara, a young girl living with macrodactyly, a rare condition that has caused abnormal growth in her arm and hand.
The fundraising campaign was initially launched with a target of ₦26 million to cover the cost of Idara’s medical procedure and surgery.
However, the response from Nigerians and other well-wishers exceeded expectations, with more than ₦36 million reportedly raised within two days.
The remarkable response has sparked an outpouring of support online, as people rallied around the teenager and her family to ensure she can access the treatment she needs.
Macrodactyly is a rare congenital condition characterised by abnormal enlargement or overgrowth of one or more fingers or toes. In Idara’s case, the condition affects her arm and hand, resulting in significant abnormal growth and the need for specialised medical intervention.
The funds raised through the campaign are expected to support her major medical treatment and surgery, offering hope to the teenager and her family.
Asherkine’s campaign has also highlighted the power of social media and digital communities to mobilise financial assistance for people facing major medical challenges.
What began as a ₦26 million appeal quickly surpassed its target, with the amount raised climbing beyond ₦36 million in under 48 hours.
The overwhelming response has been welcomed as a demonstration of Nigerians’ willingness to rally around vulnerable members of society when their stories receive visibility.
For Idara, the fundraising effort represents more than a financial milestone. It offers the possibility of receiving the specialised treatment needed to address the condition she has lived with and potentially improve her quality of life.
The campaign has also renewed conversations about access to treatment for people living with rare medical conditions, many of whom face significant financial challenges in accessing specialised care.
With the fundraising target surpassed, attention now turns to Idara’s medical treatment and surgery as supporters continue to follow her journey and hope for a successful outcome. Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Found Dead At South London Home
By Ngozi Ibe, Abuja
British academic and sociologist Professor Jason Arday, who resigned from the University of Cambridge last week amid allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding aspects of his professional history, has been found dead at his home in south London.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the 41-year-old professor’s address by the London Ambulance Service shortly after 3 pm on Friday.
A police spokesperson said Arday was pronounced dead at the scene and that his next of kin had been informed and were being supported by officers.
The police said the death was being treated as unexpected but was not believed to be suspicious.
The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit, with a file expected to be prepared for the coroner.
Arday’s death comes just days after he announced his resignation from Cambridge, where he had served as Professor of Sociology of Education.
He was appointed to the position in 2023 and became the university’s youngest Black professor, a landmark appointment that attracted significant attention in British academia.
However, his tenure came under intense scrutiny in recent weeks following allegations of plagiarism and questions about inconsistencies in some statements concerning his career and achievements.
In a statement announcing his resignation, Arday said the decision had been made with “profound sadness” and that the continued accusations and public attention had taken a significant toll on him and those close to him.
“When I accepted the extraordinary honour of becoming professor of sociology at Cambridge, it was, without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life,” he said.
He added that the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a profound toll on him and the people he loved.
Arday’s resignation followed a period of intense public and academic scrutiny, including questions about claims relating to his professional achievements.
His death has now prompted renewed attention to the intense pressures faced by academics and public figures when their professional credentials come under sustained public examination.
Arday’s autobiography was also published in the United States this week by an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The publisher had previously indicated that it intended to proceed with the book’s UK publication later this month.
Before the controversy surrounding his Cambridge appointment, Arday had established himself as an influential academic voice on issues including race, inequality, education and social mobility.
His appointment at Cambridge was regarded as significant in the context of efforts to improve racial representation within senior positions in British academia.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, although police have said there is currently no indication that it was suspicious.
